panic

Panic rapture, or Panolepsy (which is also related to nympholepsy-- but which entails disappearance) can be specified in Greek medical terms as a range of effects from epilepsy, which is a complete estrangement of the body, to melancholy, which is an estrangement of the mind.

Possession results from a failure of ritual....Panic possession is generally similar to Dionysian mania . but panic possession is a collective state, which runs through a group like wildfire. When Pan strikes human groups, he knocks them loose from culture by destroying all sense of the proper balance between man and god.

Perhaps, after all, attraction and repulsion, charm and terror, should be seen as complementary aspects of a single phenomenon.
